Our Speaker:

Bill MacPhee (D.Min., Fuller Theological Seminary)
Bill MacPhee

Bill has been involved in student and family ministries in the local church for almost thirty years. He thoroughly enjoys empowering teams of student and adult volunteers to see their dreams for ministry become reality. Bill is currently serving, in partnership with Dr. Chap Clark, as President of ParenTeen™ and Hurt Seminars, and teaches as adjunct faculty at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is also a member of the speaker team with the Evangelical Covenant Church, where he is an ordained minister.

Bill has served on the pastoral staff at Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City, CA, at Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, KS, and most recently at Rolling Hills Covenant Church, in Rolling Hills, CA.

Bill and Cynthia have been married for over twenty-five years and together they have two children: 23-year-old Conner, and 15-year-old Heather. Bill loves this season of life with two kids traveling through the adolescent and young adult years. Bill enjoys camping, surfing, biking, and reading. Bill and Cynthia make their home in Torrance, CA.

What is that you CCC?

We live in a highly individualistic and fragmented culture, where men are encouraged to become self-sufficient and yet at the same time invited into intimate relationships. Some men retreat into work or entertainment. Other men lead secret lives of indiscretion. Some rare men rise up and follow Jesus with character, courage, and commitment. Jesus forgave the apostle Peter, commissioned him into courageous leadership, and laid out before him a path to discipleship. Our weekend will include honest talk about the potential lonely pain of discipleship combined with the invitation into high impact relational leadership.

Who Carries Your Burdens?

Galatians 6:1-2

My Mountaineering Accident Story

Who is on the trail with you?

Potential Questions for Discussion:

§  What did you think about Bill's story? How did it make you feel?

§  Have you ever been through a really tough time? How did you make it through?

§  What do you do, or where do you turn when your life gets so hard it seems unbearable?

§  Do you have someone like John Woodhall (the teacher) in your life? Who are they?

§  What can you do to help others going through tough times?

Pain

Romans 5:3-5

My main points:

§  While I’m alive, I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand God’s ways [Isaiah 55:8-9].

§  The example of other Christ followers leads me to the tentative conclusion that God doesn’t promise a “get out of jail free card” for pain [Hebrews 11:35-39].

§  I grow best in adversity - Gods’ agenda is transformation [Romans 3:3-5].

§  My suffering, like the suffering of Christ, is not only for me, but part of God’s redemptive plan for other people [2 Corinthians 1:3-6].

God’s Family of Families

Ephesians 2:19-22

God is changing the world through the people who make up the church. God’s dream includes launching the church as a counter cultural community where those alienated find a home. God’s dream will become reality as we form our churches more like a family and less like a shopping mall.

Two Requirements:

§  Consider the church an extension of your family.

§  Be responsible to one another.

Igniting the Next Generation

Psalm 78:1-8

The family of families is called to pass on faith and ignite the next generation.

Our method: parable.

Our audience: children.

Our content: wonder.

Application: the community of faith is called to teach for results.

§  Teach for tomorrow.

§  Teach for results.
